His use of leather moves away from the extreme complexity of earlier works like The Heaven of Nine Levels, searching instead for pure, raw simplicity.

The base of these works consists of leather in its near-primitive state. The process is straightforward: the artist cuts and punctures the hide while it is soft and soaked in water. As the leather dries and shrinks, it finds its own final shape. While the artist tries to plan the cuts, the drying process naturally stretches and changes them. In the 2025 series 艹 (The Grass Radical), these openings are tightly pulled together by leather cords, looking like stitched wounds or the mysterious lines on a person’s palm.

As a vital material in human history, leather is part of our daily lives in many ways. By preserving the raw texture and organic form of the hide, the artist uses the natural energy of the material to give warmth and power to ancient stories.

The natural character of the leather transforms the man-made cuts into something unexpected. The process is like a game of give-and-take between the artist and the material. The final pieces look like ancient masks from long-lost civilizations or tribal faces from the Stone Age. Ultimately, these works show both the power and the helplessness of humanity: the final result is more of a chance meeting between man and nature, rather than something that can be perfectly controlled or designed.

*Leather has long been widely used in traditional Chinese art.
