{"id":19013,"date":"2024-03-20T13:26:18","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T12:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/museonazionaleromano.it\/?p=19013"},"modified":"2026-03-12T16:43:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T15:43:16","slug":"archaeological-finds-from-castel-gandolfo-delivered-to-the-national-roman-museum-by-the-carabinieri-tpc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/museonazionaleromano.it\/en\/2024\/03\/archaeological-finds-from-castel-gandolfo-delivered-to-the-national-roman-museum-by-the-carabinieri-tpc\/","title":{"rendered":"Archaeological Finds from Castel Gandolfo Delivered to the National Roman Museum by the Carabinieri TPC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"128\" data-end=\"536\">On the morning of <strong data-start=\"146\" data-end=\"158\">March 18<\/strong>, at the <strong data-start=\"167\" data-end=\"192\">National Roman Museum<\/strong> in the <strong data-start=\"200\" data-end=\"223\">Baths of Diocletian<\/strong>, the Carabinieri from the <strong data-start=\"250\" data-end=\"277\">Castel Gandolfo Station<\/strong>, together with the <strong data-start=\"297\" data-end=\"366\">Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (TPC)<\/strong>, handed over to the museum\u2019s director, <strong data-start=\"406\" data-end=\"431\">Prof. St\u00e9phane Verger<\/strong>, a series of archaeological finds of inestimable value dating back to the early Roman Imperial period.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"538\" data-end=\"916\">The collection includes a <strong data-start=\"564\" data-end=\"585\">marble male torso<\/strong> recognized as a copy of the <strong data-start=\"614\" data-end=\"643\">Eros of Thespiae with bow<\/strong>, based on a bronze original by the great Greek sculptor <strong data-start=\"700\" data-end=\"712\">Lysippos<\/strong> (4th century BCE), <strong data-start=\"732\" data-end=\"772\">two fragments of a draped male torso<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"774\" data-end=\"813\">fragments of decorated marble slabs<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"815\" data-end=\"844\">pieces of marble cladding<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"875\">portions of a statue base<\/strong>, and a <strong data-start=\"883\" data-end=\"913\">tip of a transport amphora<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"1468\">These fragments were discovered in 2021 by the Carabinieri in <strong data-start=\"980\" data-end=\"1018\">Castel Gandolfo, Via dei Pescatori<\/strong>, during the clearing of a residential property. With the collaboration of the <strong data-start=\"1097\" data-end=\"1135\">Rome branch of the Carabinieri TPC<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"1144\" data-end=\"1234\">Superintendence for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of the Rome metropolitan area<\/strong>, the recovered artifacts were cataloged and seized.
